My Chequered obsession

You know there are certain things that you are obsessed with. You just like them so much that no matter what ,your eyes just go there. Does it happen to you. Well, shoes are not counted cos if you aren't obsessed with them then u need to go see a doc asap :-) Apart from that do u have any obsession?

Mine are with checks.  I just love that pattern no matter what. The best thing about this pattern is that It is not specific to any season and its evergreen so you can sport it any time of the year. Whether Gingham or Plaid or Tartan I love them all. Although this trend came back last season with a bang and was seen a lot on catwalks, it has been there forever.

First of all what's the difference between Gingham and Plaid. To begin with, both are from the same family of checks

Gingham is a checkerboard pattern that never varies in style, whereas plaid is of Scottish ancestry and the check was similar to a coat of arms; each check varied from clans, regions and/or districts.
Tartan is a form of plaid and is is a multi colored check pattern. Gingham on the other hand is limited to three (block, shaded and usually white). Gingham checks are always equal squares, while plaids vary from square to rectangle

So next time you see checks I am sure you can identify the pattern Right?

Plaid has traditionally been a winter print but thanks to fashion industry it has been incorporated in summer wear as well by changing the material be it cotton, sheer or silk
Personally I love check shirts. They are available in all kinds of checks and colors. I feel they give a very cool and comfy vibe. They have the capacity to make you look grungy or sophisticated.
Wear them with jeans or shorts an you are good to go.

Pippa Middleton  and Jessica Alba have incorporated it in their casual style and how cool do they look

Opt for checkered bottoms

or as a dress

On the runway

I picked up a couple of this pattern from Abercrombie and Fitch , Hollister and Promod last year so I have a lot of these in my cupboard but I love it so much that whenever I see them on the racks I have to pick them up. Infact I made by husband buy a couple of these patterns from GANT & Tommy Hilfiger. They have an awesome collection this summer. Yeah so you can take ur husbands or boyfriends for some retail therapy.

There is nothing much to say about this pattern except for that you should have one or two in your closet or in your life this summer in some form or the other.

Love you all

Winding the clock forward- From SATC to GG

Hi my dear dear FuFies,  so how was the weekend. I am sure many of you would have been glued to the TV set watching the nail biting IPL Finale. What a match!! I must confess that I haven't watched IPL at all this season but the Finale couldn't be missed. After all it was Shahrukh Khan vs MS Dhoni both my favorites. I was a bit sad for MSD but nevertheless happy that KKR won cos they deserved to and hopefully Mr Khan would stop behaving like an enfant terrible for a few days.

Apart from that I finished watching my favorite TV Series Gossip Girl and will miss them for a while till Season 6 starts. If you are truly smitten by Fashion like I am , I would not have to introduce you to the 2 most popular shows of their own time. Sex and the City and Gossip Girls. Both of them very high on glam and both setting many a trends in terms of Fashion.

Ofcourse, Carry Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is the one who kind of introduced us to the uber sophisticated premium luxury fashion brands during those times and I must say that Serena Vanderwoodsen  ( Blake Lively ) & Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) have been successful in carrying forward her legacy.

Though both the TV series have a decade of gap, I can’t help but wonder how similar they are in setting the fashion trend. When Carrie left us , there was a void created because all of a sudden we didn’t know whom to look up to for fashion advice but then walked in Serena Vanderwoodsen & Blair Waldorf  and the world sat up to take notice.

Both the TV series are set in Manhattan so have the same kind of feel to it and both are taking us through the same roller coaster emotions of breakups and dilemmas while holding on to their style and glamor. FASHION being the main driver and some brands emerging as heros.

Carrie made Manolo Blahniks  & Jimmy Choos an essential style staple while Serena & Blair are promoting Louboutins , Brian Atwoods and Roger Vivier with an elan.  Infact Serena popularized Ankle booties & boots with short dresses so much that I had to have a few of those in my shoe collection.

While Carrie was the only person we would follow for style tips, Gossip Girl has Serena’s  best friend Blair Waldorf playing an equally important role in establishing trends. Her style is a bit conservative yet elegant maybe because she idolizes Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Serena on the other hand is more fierce and sexy.

Blair made headbands so cool that you would see a return of the this accessory in a big way on the fashion circuit since last 2 years. Otherwise we would just use them as mere tools to hold back hair while applying make up or in the gym.

Accessorise and Claire has some of the funkiest headbands I have seen.

Serena made her messy hair  (be it ponytails, braids or loose hair) such a  rage that people like me do not wash hair for days together to achieve the messy look (the dirtier the hair, the better the backcombing :) )

While Carrie and Serena  are quintessential trend setters, some of Carrie’s clothes were over the top but Serena wears today’s fashion with a little bit of twist. She has very comfortably stepped into SJPs shoes and is not afraid to mix her wardrobe for some edgy and unique style. I feel Carrie was more aspirational whereas Serena is more achievable.

Blake Lively just like Sarah Parker has taken her on screen style off the screen and is fast becoming a celebrity to watch out for in fashion circuits. No wonder she is Karl Lagerfield’s latest muse.

Blair Waldorf on the other hand is known for being snooty and wearing nothing less than the most luxurious designer stuff. Infact she scoffs at those who are seen in anything less (she  is quite cute though). Her style is more classic & elegant. She did make Viver shoe very popular true Carrie style. Remember the famed Manolos

Both the shows have successfully set trends for Fashion followers
Trends set by SATC
  1. Mixing  High street with Vintage and Luxury. It was no longer considered  uncouth to mix and match. Infact it has become a trend for the masses.
  2. High heels became the most important part of your style. Till then shoes were just a part of your wardrobe to complete the look. With Manolos and Jimmy Choos and Louboutins shoe lust was taken to a different level altogether.
  3. Cocktail dresses became quite a trend. SATC brought frocks back to fashion and designers started giving them a new twist every season.
  4. Scrunchies were thrown out of your hair accessories cos it was considered not so cool to wear them unless you are washing your face in the bathroom.
  5. Designer handbags & clutches became must haves.
  6. Carrie necklace.. How many of you bought it?

Carrie's Style Diaries

Trends set by Gossip Girl

1.  Serena’s Bohemian style of dressing – pieces that are loose, comfortable and at the same time cool

2. Blair’s headband have been such a trend setter

3. Messy ponytails, braids, Serena’s hairstyles. She taught us tying your hair could be as chic as leaving them loose

4. Accessorising  with statement necklaces

5. Blazer with dresses were a huge trend last season

6. How to dress like a Royalty. Blair taught us how to bring back the grace of Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn and yet look stylish and modern

7. Last but not the least the breath taking beautiful dresses

Though I still miss SATC and Carrie’s style. I would like to say that Blake & Leighton are doing Carrie proud and taking forward her legacy in a much desired fashion.

What do you all think FuFies??

The much highly anticipated Appearance!

Well, the much anticipated appearance at Cannes has finally been made by Ms Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. There were many a speculation on her high profile visit to Cannes especially due to her post pregnancy weight gain. It seems to have become a topic of national debate these days and a lot of people are losing sleep over Aishwarya's decision to take it easy with her weight loss. So obviously everyone was waiting with bated breath.

As far as I am concerned I do not have any problems with her weight gain cos c'mon she just became a mother and we shouldn't be so harsh on her. It does take time to loose fat especially pregnancy fat and its her personal choice at what pace she wants to do it so guys give her a break!

However, having said that I feel that Cannes being one of the prestigious glamour event, she could have skipped it this time. The world of glamour is cruel and celebrities of her stature tend to come sooner in the eye of storm. She belongs to this industry and she is bound to be judged. Her affair with Cannes has been sort of tumultuous with her being criticized for her sartorial choices in the past so its like taking too much risk with some amount of weight gain. Although it is quite a bold step on her part and has won her accolades but from a pure fashion sense I feel she fell flat.

I am glad that she chose an Indian outfit cos that was the right thing to do but the Abu - Sandeep sari didn't do much justice. I found the outfit very boring and dull for a Red carpet Cannes event. Though  she wasn't utterly disappointing , her pretty face being her savior but the overall appearance was downright average. Maybe she could have played with colors a little bit.

And I have no word to describe her in this Ellie Saab Couture. I am not sure if the angle is not right or the dress is looking plain hideous

As far as her other press event appearances were concerned, this ombre Angelo Katsapis outfit was not at all flattering. There was something wrong with it near the shoulders i guess.

But all wasn't lost for this former beauty queen, I did like her in the Roberto Cavalli Kaftaan. I feel the outfit was pretty forgiving about her weight gain. It looked comfortable and yet very very elegant.

What do you guys think.. Do write your opinions.

Much Love :)

This Summer go wild with Colors!

Hi everyone. Summers are the time to look bright and cheerful. When I think of summers there are a few things that cum to my mind like beaches, shorts, flip flops, whites, florals and bright colors.
The best way to show your love for colors is Color Blocking.

Putting together varied colors to create an ensemble can be a bit tricky. You got to have a good sense to mix and match colors and come up with something interesting else you will end up looking like a clown. Its a fierce trend especially if you chose bold colors but you can always tone it down using whites, blacks or neutrals.
There is a science behind color blocking which is used for mixing and matching of colors. I tried to study & understand it but after a few combinations I was totally lost, so I said to myself chuck the wheel and go with your instinct. What is appealing to your eyes will definitely appeal to the world so mostly I go with my instinct.

I must admit that this article has been one of the difficult ones to write cos it is kind of hard to explain and there are so many color combinations that you end up with a whole lot of choices. Nevertheless I have tried to best of my abilities to make it easily understandable.

However, it doesn't mean I won't share a little bit that I learnt cos that is pretty simple and basic stuff. Also I will try and tell you some eye appealing combos so that you don't have to apply too much mind. Just find these colors in your wardrobe and go with them. If you are still confused then just follow these pictures. They are awfully lot anyways :-)

I feel the Indian designers use the color blocking technique very well. No Wonder the outfits are so colorful and bright.

We begin by looking at the color wheel. Don't get scared.. what I will tell you is very easy and basic

To begin with I am sure you all know Red, Blue and Yellow are the primary colors. All the other colors emerge from this family Right!! If you add white to the color it becomes a Tint color and if you add black it becomes a shade of the color so that's the story with colors.

Complimentary colors
The colors immediately opposite to each other are called the complimentary colors. These are used to build contrast eg : Red & green (Remember Christmas tree) Yellow &Violet, Blue & orange or Yellow orange & Blue Violet. Simple Right?? Colors that are just directly opposite each other.

Yellow- Violet / Blue- Orange /Violet Blue - Red Orange combos
Aqua Blue - Orange combo

Or check out this very fresh Lime Green - Fuchsia combo. Bold and Beautiful

If you don't wish to try such bold colors then the hottest combo in complimentary colors currently is the midnight blue - Tangerine combo and it is my favorite. Its sophisticated and the Orange just lifts up the attire.

In case of color blocking, you can use a solid color dress and use different color accessories as an accent color.

Analogous colors
These are the colors adjacent to each other. They could be in the same family like Red- Red Orange - Crimson OR Yellow- Yellow Orange. You can also choose from a diferent family but close to each other like Yellow and Lime green.
Yellow - Yellow Orange / Yellow- (shade of ) Lime Green
Pick up not more than 3 colors for color blocking or just stick to 2 and accessorize  with neutrals. You will never go wrong this way

The favorite combo that emerged from Analalogous colors is the Red - Fuschia (crimson) combo. See how elegantly they have paired these bright combos with neutral colored heels.

I hope you are with me till now. The 3rd one is fun and gives variety of options.

Colors at 90 degree from each other

The colors at 90 degree from each other always make up for a good combo eg Leighton Meester's green and yellow combo OR Yellow and Orange Combo. These are colors at 90 from each other.
Yellow - Green being my favorite.

Yellow - Orange combo / Green - yellow combo

Even like Blake Lively. Just take a solid color dress and choose a different color shoe. Blue & Violet combo at 90 with each other.
Blue - Violet combo

Green and Blue are at 90 from each other

Some more from this family

Kareena looks stunning in crimson violet combo

The one that's gotten very popular in this scheme is Pink(crimson) and Orange . To add a 3rd color check out the blue shoes or if you aren't sure keep it simple like the model.

An Equilateral Triangle
To add the 3rd color, make an equilateral triangle ( a triangle with equal sides) and wherever the edges fall that's your combo

green- violet - orange / red- blue - yellow
So this was the science of Color wheel that I understood. I hope I could make sense to you guys. I have tried my best to make sense of all this with Pictorial references.

Now there are some combos that do not kind of fit in the science explained above but I am sure there is some logic to them. These are so appealing to eyes and make a beautiful collage of colors. My favorites would be :

1. Red and Blue

Add a hint of green to it

2. Lemon Yellow and Blue. This combo is just so pleasing to eyes.

The other version of the same would be Aqua Blue and Yellow. It is one of my favorites

3.  Pink and Yellow

There are lots more but these were some of my favorites to try this summer.

Tips on Color Blocking
1. If you are new to this technique I suggest go easy with colors. Take baby steps. Just try color blocking with 2 colors first. Take one as a feature color and use the other color to accent it. Like wear a blue color dress and wear orange shoes and carry an orange purse or vice versa.

2. If you wearing 2 Tone outfit, please keep your accessories neutral. Do not try to use another color with accessories

3. Most Importantly stick to a max of 3 colors. Do not go beyond that.. It might look good in a picture but trust me it won't in real life.

4. Use whites or blacks or nudes or beiges to tone down a color blocking if need be eg. Beige and Orange or Beige and Red is a beautiful combo.

5. Keep your make up simple with color blocked outfits

6. In the end have fun with colors and try all sorts of combos. Color wheel is just to give you a rough idea about combos. Just go with your instinct.. Don't try too hard. It will come naturally to you. Remember if it appeals you, it will appeal the world. Take an opinion from a dear one before stepping out otherwise chances are you will yourself look like a color wheel and we don't want that. Do we??

Color Blocking technique need not be just for your clothes. It can be used in make up, in nails, in decorating your house etc etc. You just need to have good sensibilities and yes girls experimenting is the key.

Do tell me if this article was good enough for you guys.

Ciao.
